Capturing Ancient France : A Mixed Media Journey

July 25- August 1, 2018

In this spirited workshop let’s create Artist Journals with your original prints, Jewelry and small medieval artifacts to capture our week in the French countryside. The region is rich with medieval villages, artists, flea markets and fairs, which we will draw on for inspiration and ephemera gathering.

What You’ll Create

Start the week making a multi-signature journal covered with beautiful French fabric and polymer elements – an “idea collector” for inspiration and techniques. New printmaking techniques will be explored- easy, low-tech and unique. Next we’ll create jewelry and small artifacts that “tell a story” inspired by French medieval village life, the Renaissance court and your imagination.

Techniques will focus on integrating polymer clay, textiles, papers, flea market treasures, local goodies and market “finds”. Instructed studio, delightful field trips, Open studio at night and exquisite food from our personal chef. Live and work at La Cascade where time relaxes and creativity flows.

Experience the rich landscape of the Languedoc region of France and the unique cultural resources of its artists, past and present. We’ll be based at Gwen Gibson’s retreat center La Cascade, a beautifully restored stone house in the village of Durfort , one hour east of Toulouse.France1-forblog.jpg

The village of Durfort has been making copper ware since the Middle Ages. Cathar castles, medieval villages, flea markets, fields of sunflowers in July await your exploration. The region is an hour and a half from the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean and a couple of hours from Provence .
