Capturing Ancient France : Artist Journals and Art Dolls

A Mixed Media workshop with Dayle Doroshow

La Cascade Retreat Center in Southern France

July 9 – 16, 2008

Limited to 8 participants

In this spirited workshop let’s explore the fusion of Artist Journals and Art Dolls to capture our week in the French countryside.  The region is rich with medieval villages, artists, flea markets and fairs, which we will draw on for inspiration and ephemera gathering.  Start the week making a multi-signature journal covered with beautiful French fabric and polymer elements - an “idea collector” for inspiration and techniques.  Next we’ll create mixed media Art Dolls that “tell a story” inspired by French medieval village life, the Renaissance court and your imagination.  Techniques will focus on integrating polymer clay, textiles, papers, flea market treasures, words and book structures as part of a figure.  Instructed studio, delightful field trips, Open studio at night and exquisite food from our personal chef.  Live and work at La Cascade where time relaxes and creativity flows.

Experience the rich landscape of the Languedoc region of France and the unique cultural resources of its artists, past and present.  We’ll be based at Gwen Gibson’s retreat center La Cascade, a beautifully restored stone house in the village of Durfort , one hour east of Toulouse .  The village of Durfort has been making copper ware since the Middle Ages.  Cathar castles, medieval villages, flea markets, fields of sunflowers await your exploration.  The region is an hour and a half from the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean and a couple of hours from Provence .

The Workshop:  Instructed Studio each morning, a delightful field trip every afternoon to artist studios, villages, a local monastery, flea markets, music concerts and Open Studio each night.  Field trips are optional if you want to stay home and nap, work in the studio or explore on your own.

La Cascade: Bedrooms are double occupancy (two twin beds) with shared bathrooms.  The beautiful new art studio is located on the third floor of the house and is available to work in whenever you want.  Living room, dining room and a large outside terrace that goes down to the river are part of our home. We have our personal chef to provide exquisite and healthy meals.  The price of the workshop includes most of your meals.

Workshop price of $1700 includes:
